We are an independent music company offering songwriting services. We believe with a passion, that they key to a hit record is a great song and melody. There are many instances where superb productions/instrumentals have been the driving force behind hit records, from "Popcorn" by Hot Butter, to "The Birdy Song" by The Tweets, however it has to be argued that it is extremely rare compared with those thousands of hits driven by a fantastic song.
We also believe that the song has been neglected within the last few years in favour of the reliance on studio wizadry to give a track it's hit potential. This has been to the detriment of the music industry, however those that now choose to have a great song as well as that technical production will benefit both ways, and will also stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Cover versions have also seen a serious increase which is great for the published writers, but for the Artists releasing the cover relying heavily on the sales from the record (because they usually get no income from the publishing rights), the costs will probably never recoup. "Eric Prydz" recently topped the UK Chart with sales of just over 23,000 units in a week, certainly not the sort of return needed to cover the costs of promotion and pressing. Cover versions can also receive a backlash for the Artist from both the music fans and journalists unless the cover has been chosen very carefully or produced extremely well. The obvious tricks are to include the original Artist in some way to give it that "stamp of approval", or to choose a cover that isn't so well known, so doesn't immediately get that comparison and stands a chance of being a hit in it's own right... but then, isn't that defeating the object? Why not have a great original song in the first place?
So why would an Artist benefit from an
original song or topline? Well the most obvious is respect from within
the industry itself. This will invariably lead to a higher profile
and possible longevity which is necessary to build a successful career
and that success will generate even more of the industry wanting to
be involved with them. From promoters to record companies, magazines
to radio stations, the industry loves associating itself with success
in any way so that has to be good for the Artist.
Secondly, the Artist gains respect from the people that listen and
buy music. They invariably enjoy new music and enjoy fresh, new material,
that may also give an insight to the "character" of the
Artist themselves. To be able to relate to a song in some way is also
very important, the more the listener can relate to what an Artist
is putting across, the better affinity they have, invariably thinking,
"Wow, that's just how I feel". Of course all Artists are
different so we like to gear a song towards their performing persona,
but it's great to have a "believable Artist" performing
"believable songs".
Thirdly, there is a chance that one day, someone may actually COVER
the song that was originally with our Artist in question. What an
enormous boost that would be in later years if you could benefit from
the renewed popularity of their song being covered and a hit yet again,
and the kudos associated with that is phenomenal.
JuicyLemon.com is here to help the Artist with great songs and toplines. (A "topline" by the way, is where the Artist already has an instrumental backing track, and we create the lyric and melody "over the top" to compliment it). So do get in touch if you'd like a chat about getting us involved with your project. In the meantime, browse a few clips and lyrics, and just see how diverse our repertoire can be.
And one final thing, we KNOW what makes a great song. For those that think "Songs are just a bunch of words together that rhyme"... think again!.
Best of luck with your musical endeavours, and I look forward to speaking to you soon,
Nick Arnold
